Unity with God’s people is a gift from God and only possible through fellowship with Him.

Gratitude for this gift means accepting the reality of the community He provides rather than some envisioned ideal. Christian communities are established on grace; nice/beautiful things don’t need grace, ugly things do. Relationships in a Christian community are mediated by Jesus. We don’t serve each other directly, we serve Him. He suffers with us when we suffer at the hands of our community.

We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
1 John 1:3-4 (NIV)
